The closed return or Göttingen-type wind tunnel mediates airflow friction loss by circulating the air within a circuit of ducts, allowing for high wind speeds with lower energy consumption. Additionally, compared to an open return wind tunnel it can more easily incorporate heating and cooling systems, allowing for tests to be conducted in a stable environment year-round.
